  • Post Surgery Chart-Fusion to Sacrum Category

    http://www.scoliosislinks.com/PostSurgActivities.htm

I liked this chart because it has different activities for adults fused to the sacrum.

Yesterday, was my first day back on my bicycle. I will only ride in subdivisions and will stay off the bike trails with steep hills, but, it felt great to be back on my bike. I didn't ride for long and could definitely tell I was using some different muscles than those I use with tons of walking and water aerobics. It's so good to get back to activities that I love. By practicing chipping and putting, I'm even getting optimistic that my scores will be close to normal next season when I get the okay for a full swing. Life is good after surgery!

P.S. I'm also thrilled to be tap dancing, again.

I wouldn’t be surprised if your golf game improves....When I took a few swings with the driver a few months ago, I was complimented on my form, and I’m not a golfer! Being fused adds stability and seems to be an advantage.

      Ed,
I hope you're right. You should think about taking up the sport. You must be a natural and you can still play at age 90. My dad is 90 and plays at least two days a week.

"According to scoliosis specialist Dr. Michael Neuwirth M.D., in his book "The Scoliosis Sourcebook"... When patients are discharged from the hospital, I tell them that they can do almost anything they feel comfortable doing at home. I encourage patients to set their own limits, rather than looking to me to tell them what they can and cannot do. Even though I do not restrict post-surgical activities, I recognize that the process of healing will initially impose severe limitations on what most people can do."

My surgeon had the same ideas. At 6 months, when I was going on holiday, he simply told me not to carry more than 10 kilos. The surgery is self-limiting and we are all different. However, the guide is good because it gives us an idea of what's possible and what's safe.

Yes, we are all different and I know you have to listen to your body. I want to do all that I should be doing to get back into shape while not overdoing it and causing myself more harm than good. Sometimes I get contradictions for recommendations from Dr. Lenke, his physical therapist, and his nurse. He is the least conservative of the three.

Great chart! It is funny how you can play baseball or tennis at 6 months. There is no way I could slowly jog, let alone run bases or chase after a ball. I tried to play badmitton at a family gathering a couple weeks ago, and I SUCKED! Not used to being the lousiest player... But I still had fun, and everyone was impressed that I even played. Oh well, time will tell!!

                Karen,
Thanks for the chart. I believe Dr. Rand is a bit more conservative with the timeframes.

That's great about your riding a bike. I was staying away from biking, sailing, and kayaking until next summer. What kind of bike do you have? I understand that I will need a "comfort" bike where I sit up in the seat more than the bike I currently have. For the past years, I have needed to lean over and currently have a touring bike.

On this site, I have never heard of anyone playing tennis after fusion surgery. I guess I had crossed that off my list. Maybe, I can reconsider?

Keep up with all your activities. It's a great inspiration.

                Enjoy!

                  Irene,
My bike is a Trek with wide tires, wide seat, and you sit up straight when riding. I'm definitely using some muscles that I haven't used since the surgery. I am being extremely careful.

                  Jenee',
I have no intentions of playing tennis, although it's one of my favorite sports. I could not stand in one place and let balls go past without attempting to run after them. If jogging is never allowed according to the chart, I wouldn't think tennis would ever be allowed either.

That sounds like the kind of bike that I need to get.

I agree about tennis. It would be interesting to hear if anyone has played it when fused to the sacrum. There is all the bending and twisting involved, not to mention swinging the racket against the ball.

When I was discharged from his care at 12 months post op., my surgeon said, "No running." Which unfortunately would cancel tennis out for me. Tennis was the only sport I ever really played reasonably well.

I play totem tennis with the grandkids though.

                        Irene,

Dr. Rand recommended I get a Townie bicycle. I bought the three speed model and I love it. You sit up straight with the pedals a little forward and it is so comfortable. I had a ten speed racing bike and never liked it because of leaning forward. It caused pain in my lumbar and my cervical. He also told me he had a patient playing pairs tennis after fusion from T10-sacrum.

                          Putting the bike away!

As much as I hate it . . . common sense is causing me to put my bicycle away until next spring. I have been extremely cautious looking for cars, loose gravel, etc. and riding at a slow pace in our neighborhood. Today, a squirrel ran right in front of my path. Thankfully, I saw him and could slow down enough not to hit him. If I had hit the squirrel, it could have definitely caused me to fall off of the bike. I have too much invested in this recovery to blow it by falling off of a bike, so I don't want to encourage anyone else to start bike riding at 7 months post-op.

Thanks for posting that chart! It is very helpful...it's hard to remember to ask about all these different things when you're at the surgeon's office, and they only go over the basic stuff. I asked about snowboarding and surfing but forgot to ask about biking and the elliptical...duh. I love how I'm more focused on the fun stuff verses the exercise/work out stuff lol.

I haven't tried anything besides the basic physical therapy exercises since my surgery. I am moving in a few weeks into a one story home (hallelujah!) with a pool and am VERY excited to start swimming again. But I am nervous...can anyone describe to me what it's like post-op? I don't want to twist too much.

You will love the pool. I am taking water aerobic classes but I don't twist, do crunches, or kick backward. I've been doing the breast stroke, but don't arch my back. These were the precautions that Dr. Lenke's PT told me. The water is warm and feels great! We use water weights in the classes which you can probably find online.
