Shirts after surgery

I know those of you with girls would be looking for different shirts than boys, but since our son is having his surgery at the start of August, my wife asked me what kind of shirts should she get for him. I would think putting on a t shirt would be painful for him, would a loose button up shirt or "old man" pajama top be comfortable?

You will get different response, but my daughter wore regular pull over t-shirts starting at about three days post-op. I think it depends on the kid and/or the length of their fusion. Jamie is fused from T3-L2 and had no problem lifting her arms to put her shirt on.

Button-up shirts are a really good idea. I couldn't lift my arms for quite a while. But I had a hard time finding girls' button-up shirts, so we found tanktops. Those were really easy to get on and off without lifting my arms up much. Then when I was cold, I put on a zip-up hoodie. It worked out perfectly.

My son seemed to really like the flannel button-up shirts but it was chilly a few months ago when he had his surgery but now he just wears baggy t-shirts. Your son's surgery is coming up soon. How is he feeling about it?

Hey,

He is starting to have a combination of dread of it and wanting to hurry up and get it over with. His back is really hurting him every day (I swear it looks a lot worse to me than it did back in March). They leave end of next week to go up there. Going to go to Charlotte NC with my wife's momma for a few days before the surgery. He is scheduled to go to Shriners on Friday Aug 5 for his walkthrough of the hospital and final tests. Then it is dark and early Monday when we go for the surgery. I will be up there Friday through Wed and flying home on Thurs. My wife and he will be staying a month. His sisters will be staying a week after me and coming back for school with her best friend.

How is the pain level for your son now, is it still uncomfortable? What did they do for physical rehab with him?

Hi, a "combination of dread of it and wanting to hurry up and get it over with" sounds familiar, although we were definitely more on the side of getting it over with with a tiny bit of dread or maybe more anxious I guess.

My son is doing really well and he just hit the three month mark yesterday and he does not have any back pain at all and I sure hope that he continues to do so well. There was no physical rehab involved at all and mostly we've been keeping him from pretty much anything physical for the time being for fear of him doing something to mess up his metalwork. I have probably been on the overprotective side but I can't help it b/c of all he/we've been through and I don't want anything to go wrong with his "million dollar back" as I call it, lol.

Keep us posted on what's going on with your son. He is in great hands with the Shriners of course so no worries there.
