View Full Version : 2-Year Check

Hi all--
Just wanted to share my appt. info. I am completely fused so that is great! As soon as I looked at the x-ray I could see that my lean to the left had increased since my last check. That metal "ladder" leaned more. Dr. Lenke said it was over somewhat and that there is often "settling." My rib hump had never been measured until my one-year when it measured at a 12 degrees. It is now at 14. I don't like it but can live with it if it won't get worse. He said since I am totally fused now it shouldn't change. Is that the experience of others?? He reminded me that with all the rotation I had, etc. the spine was straightened but awfully hard to change the rest that much. Therefore, some twisting remains.
I asked about yoga, and he said go for it. Do whatever. His p.t. person was showing me a couple exercises for various sore spots I deal with. She said no way to yoga! Also thought Zumba was out of the question and that I shouldn't do anything that causes you to twist back, wiggle hips any direction, or kick back legs. Kelly said she's super conservative and Kelly seemed to side more with Dr. Lenke. All of that gets confusing.

Laura (radio girl)--I don't think I found your friend. (As they called me in someone came in who could have been but didn't get a chance to ask.) I asked one lovely lady in the office if she might be your friend. She wasn't but I found out she reads us all the time and is still contemplating surgery. Didn't get to see her after but sure hope she got some answers. And...hope she might join us & tell us how her appt. was.
Overall, I think it was pretty good. As Kelly said after back surgery & at my age you are probably just going to have a lot of extra aches and pains. I'm still so much better than some so I'm very grateful for that! Janet

Thanks for the update Janet - it's great to know you're fully fused! Congratulations! Have you been discharged, or are you going back in a year?

Congratulations on being fully fused. Interesting the differences in opinions in what different medical personnel said you could do. I would wonder about yoga in that it is bending and stretching--and wouldn't that put a strain on the hardware in the back?

Just a newbie to the start of the progress and trying to equate putting scews in your back to what happens when you use scews in other building materials. Okay, probably a weird analogy...

Anyway, congratulations! Also thank you-your many posts are very helpful.

Thank you both. And I am cleared until 3 years from now! Janet

So glad to hear you are doing well. There certainly are more aches and pains as we age, but it is better than the alternative.

I am sure that is is reassuring to know you are totally fused. I am assuming that the PT that you talked to was Janet. I saw her before my surgery and then again at 3 months. She is very conservative, but I'd rather be safe than sorry. Did you ask about Pilates? I would think that would be easier on your back.

Congrats Janet!!!
2 post-op! I cannot wait! hahaha!
2 degrees is nothing compare to what we used to have. Enjoy your accomplishment!.

Complete fusion! That's wonderful, Janet!!

A couple of questions:
Do you know what your rotation was before surgery? (Just curious--mine is severe.)
Also, do you know if you were completely fused at year one? I'm just wondering if fusion continued into the second year?

Congrats again!

Golfnut--Yes, it was Janet the pt lady. I didn't mention pilates but I have done it pre-surgery. I think it would be somewhat similar.
Confusedmom--I had never had the rotation measured before or after surgery. When I went for my one year and was concerned that it had gotten worse since surgery is when they measured it at 12; now it is 14. I have no idea what it was pre-surgery or what most people would have with a 96 degree upper curve. At one year he said I was fusing and now at 2 said I was completely fused so it must have still been ongoing. Janet

Congratulations on the fusion, Janet! Could Dr. L. determine from your x-ray that you were fully fused?

I've been chuckling to myself ever since I read this post...all I can think about are boxes of cereal, and the like, with those warnings that read "contents may shift...some settling may occur"!!! So for us, life is like a box of cereal, not a box of chocolates? (smiles)

Good one, Kathy. I think I'm a box of Fruit Loops. I even had him point out the "fusion" stuff which he said showed I was totally fused. To my untrained eye, I really couldn't tell much. Janet
