  • Surgery April 5th

I originally posted this in response to another thread, so sorry if you've read it already!

My surgery was rescheduled from March 30 til April 5. Dr. Lonner decided to go from T4 to S1 instead of T1. He will do two TLIFs at levels L4-5 and L5-S1 with pelvic fixation. He is using BMP for the TLIF and any leftover will go to the other fused areas, where he will use auto- and allographs. He will be using titanium screws and rods, but possibly cobalt chromium. He is confident of success because of all my pre-op tests and MRIs so far, my overall health and fitness level, and my unfaltering positivity. He is shooting for 50-60% correction and believes my rib hump will be nearly gone with only de-rotation. He is telling me I will be home after four days, and that makes me a little nervous. I have already told the staff I want OFF narcs ASAP, they said it should be 3-4 weeks MAX if all goes as planned. I am taking part in two studies: 1) The use of TXA - tranexamic acid, which has been proven to reduce bleeding and blood loss during spinal surgeries and 2) Ancef, an antibiotic that will be administered as long as the drain is in. I am taking off from my job as a 6th grade teacher (with no classroom, but I DO have a nice office =) until September 2011. I have the days saved and more, but hope to return to work and move on with life. This forum is my daily "fix" I can't go more than a few hours without checking on everybody. You are all my inspiration and heroes.

All the best Cathy. Your surgery sounds similar to mine and mine went well. Keep up the fitness and look past your surgery date to a time in the future when it's done when you're well on the way to recovery, and you're glad you did it!

Cathy, you are going to be having almost the same thing I had done 10 days ago. I know you will be as happy with yours when you are done, as I am with mine. I cannot believe how long the buildup was, and how surreal it seems to be done with it and on the other side. I'm so very glad the waiting is done...

I, too, couldn't stay (can't) away from this wonderful sight. I am probably admitting to compulsion issues, but I check it several times a day. I was going crazy in the hospital when I wasn't feeling well enough to check it. I have grown so fond of people I haven't even met and love to hear their successes and help in any way I can. I am glad to be on the other side now so I can hopefully help those on the threshhold. Good Luck and write with any questions or concerns. It is why we are here.
