  • Day 1 Post Op

This is Karen's sister-in-law again reporting on Karen's first full day after surgery. She is doing great!! She looks great too! Slept for short periods of time thoughout the whole day. Sleep is good!! In and out of loopyness and being coherent (one of the lovely side affects anesthesia). So far she is managing the pain very well. Sat up in a chair for an hour this morning. Tomorrow physical therapy starts! So far things are going awesome!

Wonderful news, so far so good! Don't forget to start asking the nurses about bowel management--don't want to wait too long to get things moving.

    Thanks for keeping us updated.

Great to hear Karen is doing so well. Keep up the good work!

Laurie Anne - Dr. Kelly was the Fellow with Dr Bridwell when I had my surgery Aug 31 and he checked on me in the hospital usually before Dr Bridwell's 6:15 or 6:30am daily visits. Do these guys ever sleep? He was really nice. He was actually the one who screwed the halo into my skull. (glad I didn't know how they were attached before my surgery)

                  Wow! You're posting already - that's great!

About rehab, you'll find you improve dramatically at first and I know you will surprise yourself with what you will be able to do. Being able to go right home from the hospital was such a relief for me - I'm sure I improved even more because I was in my own home. It probably sounds silly but I was really happy to have the comfort of our two cats (Snapper and Marshmallow). Being a dog owner I know you know what I mean!

Take care and keep up the good work!

                    Hi Karen,
I agree with doodie, you'll be comfortable at home. I too thought how could I go right home but after an entire week in the hospital, I knew I would be able to do it. You'll be surprised how you'll feel. Of course, it's scary and uncomfortable but you will get stronger every day. I realize everyone is different, but I do think you'll be okay. It will be five weeks on Tuesday I had my spinal fusion and I feel like a different person. It's truly amazing how you feel from week to week. From your positive postings, I have no doubt you will do fine. Any questions, feel free to ask. My best to you. LYNN

Yes, Dr. Kelly is very nice. He actually did the right side of my fusion while Lenke did the left side. He visited me every morning in the hospital around the same time between 6 and 6:30am. He's got a great bed-side manner and is very sociable. It's funny but I miss that and the ice chips. I sure wish I had a fridge that would make those little ice chips. Those were the best thing about the hospital! LOL

                        Karen

Try not to worry about things right now. Rehab can come later. Sometimes the Docs want us to wait....One day at a time.

                        Congratulations.

Dr. Kelly told me that Dr. Lenke is really proud of my X-rays so that makes me think I will be proud of my new back. I may go home on Wed.
John said every time he walks in the house, the dogs go crazy looking for me. I can't wait, but want to stay as ling as I need.

It's great to hear you're doing well in the hospital!! My dog was very upset with me being gone, and I was only gone 4 days. Now that I'm home, he hardly leaves my side. So cute!

Hope you're well enough to go home soon! It gets a little better every day that goes by!
