  • Update on LaurieAnne

    Hello All -

I have been a silent member of this forum since June mainly because I am petrified about the whole idea of surgery. That being said the experiences you all have shared have continued to strenghten me so thanks to all.

I just wanted to give a quick update on LaurieAnne. She wants me to let you all know that she has done very well so far. She does not have access to the internet so she probably will not be able to post in person till she gets home.

Thanks GOE! Don't worry, we were all petrified of surgery (well most of us anyway!) I used a mild anti-anxiety med and it helped tremendously. Stopped taking them the day I had surgery and never needed them since.

It's good to know Laurie is doing well, thanks for letting us know. Please tell her we are all thinking of her and wishing her a smooth road through recovery.

First of all thank you ALL for your many thoughts prayers and well wishes! It was a long surgery (a little over 8 hours ) and feel like I got ran over by a mac truck but it will be worth it. Everything aches and probably will for awhile just be sure to to stay on top of your med doses. I have gained a little over 3 inches in height!!!! I now stand a little over 5'9. My curves were reduced from 68 thoracic to 0 thoracic and 86 lumbar to 15 degree lumbar ~ Talk about a miracle. GOD IS SO GOOD!! I find it most challenging to sleep as it gets so uncomfortable but everyday it gets better and I am finally SCOLIOSIS FREE!

                Laurie,
I'm sure you are having some tough days, but, wow, what a good correction. You will be so proud of your new figure. If you have any last minute suggestions for me since I will be with the same nursing staff, that would be great. I have lots of confidence in Dr. Lenke, but not much for the nursing staff, based on what I have heard.

That’s an incredible correction! Would love to see the before and after x-rays at some point. Try to hang through this difficult period, you will do just fine.....

                    Laurie Anne,

That is amazing!!! I'm so happy for you. Hope you have a smooth and speed recovery. Would love to see the after X ray and the pic on your back when you get a chance to post it! Hugs!!!! Happy new year!!!

What corrections did Dr. Lenke think would be able to achieve before the surgery? This is true amazing w/ 0 degree on your Thoracic and 15 degrees on your lumber!

Did you donate your own blood? Did you need the transfusion? Is it just posterior or both anterior and pasterior? What level is your fusion? is there any hip fixation?

                        3 Weeks Post-Op!!!!

I have to apologize for not posting in such a long time. I've been so wiped out because the week I came home from the hospital family came in from out of town to visit and then everyone got the flu so I was in bed for 3 days straight taking antinausea meds around the clock so as not to throw up...sooo not a fun way to spend the holidays, but there will be more So I just took post op pics this morning and will try to get them posted tonight.

As far as Dr. Lenke's predicted correction, he said he likes to underestimate the correction so if it's better than he predicts patients are even more ecstatic. He said he could get my curves down to around 20 degrees and the reality is they are both around like 10 (I must have been under the influence of the pain meds when I heard zero). He said he couldn't make the curves zero or my clavicle and shoulders wouldn't be even.

I was not allowed to donate my own blood prior to surgery as Lenke believes that it weakens your body and leaves you more susceptible to infection. My family donated and Lenke thought I would need 4 units but turns out I only needed 1 unit!!

I am fused from T-4 to L-4 no pelvic fixation. I am truly amazed at the outcome. I grew nearly 3 inches! The pain was managed pretty well but much better once I got home. When at the hospital, the nurses are great but they are understaffed so my meds were always late and then it was hard to get the pain back under control. My advice is to have someone stay with you at the hospital to keep track of when you are due for more and take it about 15-30 mins before it's due.

My pain is very minimal now and I am off the percoset and starting to wean off the oxycotin. I am trying to walk more. I still have some numbness down my incision and some on my hips but it gets better everyday!

Thanks again for all your thoughts and prayers and please email me with any questions or if you'd like to chat! Take care!
