Hi Everyone,

Irene's surgery went extremely well today. No surprises. Nothing complex. It was what the surgeon expected from the MRI, Milogram and various Xrays. I guess "uneventful" is good in this business. It took a long time though - from 9:30 to about
7:30 this evening. She's in the recovery room now - kicking her legs and swinging her arms - making sure everything is still working. She'll go from here to the ICU for the next 24 hours. When she gets a room I will let everyone know. Let's hope for a speedy and easy recovery.

Here is an update on Irene from her husband Steve from last night. I'm glad she is on the other side and that everything went well.

I reckon! I remember wriggling fingers and toes but that's it!

Hi Irene and Steve, I'm glad to hear all went well yesterday. Dr. Rand is also my surgeon and my operation is scheduled for January 11th...

"Hi Everyone,

Irene's doing fine. She's still in the ICU till tomorrow though. She actually gets better care there as the patient/nurse ratio is close to 1/1.

The honeymoon with morphine is wearing off though ( great stuff as some may already know ) and the operation pain and discomfort is

more apparent. The good news is she's moving on to oxycontin! The surgeon came by this evening and said everything is normal and

moving according to schedule. She is getting all your emails and appreciates them.

Steve"

Hi Everyone,

Irene's fine, but still in the ICU. Since she gets better care here, her doctor wanted her to stay another night till she gets over the hump with the operational pain and discomfort. This usually takes a few days before peaking and then declining we're told.

Physical Therapy did have her stand twice today and walk a couple of steps.

Everyone here is positive about her longterm outlook so she just has to get by this initial post operative period.

Sorry I am a day late with this update. I never had a chance to check my email yesterday. We went to a great Christmas concert last night to hear the Marine Band at Cherry Point. Amazing and it was free too.
I'm so glad Irene is doing well. It must be slow in the ICU for them to keep her another day. I got moved out of there after one day even before there was a room ready for me and I was having hallucinations.

Hi Everyone,

Irene had a much better day today regarding the operation pain. We're looking forward to tomorrow - her fourth day - which everyone tells us is when you're really over the hump. She did get up twice today and sit in a chair for half an hour each time and walk some more.

But still under the influence of the pain meds though makes her a little "loopy".

We did have a graduation ceremony when she was released from the ICU early this evening and moved to her own room #521. Seems like each little step is a major event.

She's been getting your emails through the hospital - enjoys reading them - and appreciates the support.

Sounds like Irene is doing great. There was no way that I could sit for 30 minutes three days after surgery.

Hi Everyone,

Some of you have said you didn't have the hospital email address so I have forwarded an earlier Irene email that has it.

Irene is doing fine - getting up more, sitting up in a chair more, walking more - pretty much on schedule. She should be home

early this week unless she goes to rehab.

Hi Everyone,

This is it! My last email!

Irene is home now and officially " ON THE OTHER SIDE ". She's fast asleep and looking forward to a long and restful recuperation.

You can email her here at home now. I'm sure that as she gets stronger she'll be contacting you.

Steve

Thanks Steve, I am so glad Irene is home and you are taking such good care of her. We all appreciate your daily updates. Now, we will wait for Irene to feel good enough to post herself. How great that she didn't have to go to a rehab hospital. Tell her I am sorry I didn't email her at the hospital. We have had company so I really just wanted to get your emails posted for her.
