  • I need help-revision surgery -options on what to do!

I have been on here quite a few times in the past couple months. I am the one that has two surgeons. One is just an orthopedic surgeon that specializes in ankle ,foot and spine. He referred me to a Surgeon that specializes in spinal deformities. ( No.1: Dr. Alvine No2: Dr. Haft) Alvine helped Haft with the surgery. They fused me from pelvis to T10. Then did an osteotomy on L4/5(I think) I don't have my records in front of me. But it didn't work anyway. I am leaning forward as opposed to leaning to the side before. This surgery was to correct scoliosis caused from a previous surgery on my back. Now I am in worse pain and can't straighten up. The surgeons admitted to not fusing far enough up. And so they are talking it over and will get back to me when they come up with a plan to fix it. I guess my concern is if I should first get a second opinion before I proceed forward. Problem is---I want it done and I mean soon! It is so hard to walk and the pain is unthinkable! Anyway, I will wait to see what these surgeons have to say and get back to you. NAPTOWN78-- I know you had revision surgery and had similar problems, so maybe you could enlighten me a little on this subject. I am scared---but ready to get something done so I can have my life back!! I am a 58 yr. old grandma of nine granchildren. I want to be able to travel to see them. Thanks for listening. I hope this made sense to you all. Soft Hugs to you!! babyboomer16

Personally, if it were me, I would not want to return to the surgeon who did not get it right the first time. I would want to be treated by someone who has a LOT of experience in adult spinal deformity. I liked your idea about going to the Mayo Clinic for an evaluation. I believe you mentioned that you are not that far from there. That’s what I would do if I were in your shoes. I sincerely hope you can find some resolution. You deserve it.

      Hi BB,
I am so sorry you are going through this...I feel your pain as I have been through it myself. I know you are tempted to rush because of your pain and disability. Every day must be so difficult for you. BUT, your new search for information must be just as thorough
as your original scoliosis research was. This is a major surgery too, and you want to get it right. Take your time, get a second opinion after you hear Dr Haft's plan. How long has it been since your surgery? See if you can get your records from Dr Haft's office. I wish you well and I know you will be okay...

If I were you, I'd certainly want the NEXT surgery to be the LAST surgery. I think it's irresponsible NOT to get a second, third and even fourth opinion. You trusted these guys once--I wouldn't give them another chance to screw you up even worse.

Like Chris suggested, start with the Mayo Clinic.

I'm sorry if I sound harsh, but the more you get screwed up, the harder it will be to get fixed, even from a very qualified surgeon.

          ((Hugs))

Is this the same Dr. Haft?

            http://www.sanfordhealth.org/doctors...1487&name=haft

If so, were you aware that he's a pediatric specialist?

You're in a tough position. It's not like you have a lot of options, being away from a major metropolitan area with multiple choices for specialists with a lot of experience.

              Linda,
On this same website there is a video of Dr Haft giving a talk about the inability to stand up straight. He says his specialties are kyphosis, scoliosis, and other spinal deformities both adolescent and adult. It was interesting to watch...there are 3 videos.
