  • 12 weeks post-op - is it ok to use treadmill?

I am now about 12 weeks post-op. This is also the last week I have a full-time sitter for my kids before she goes back to college! Ughhh, it's scary for me. I was just wondering since she is now leaving if I'm allowed to do the treadmill. Usually when she was here I would take a long walk everyday, but now that she's leaving, I can't leave my 3 and 5 year old at home so it would be most convienent to exercise on my treadmill. I'm just wondering if it's too early in my recovery and if it would "throw" my back out. I forgot to ask my dr and don't see him until December. Just wanted to know if anyone asked their doctors and if it is ok to use the treadmill.

Also, this week my neck has improved so much, but unfortunately I have SEVERE left shoulder pain. Nothing will take this pain away. I've had it bad for about 2 weeks now. Feels like it may be a rotator cuff injury, tendonitis, or even frozen shoulder. This shoulder was perfectly fine before my surgery on June 8. My PT is unsure but is giving me alot of exercises for it because she said it has atrophied. You can see it in the mirror by comparing it to my right shoulder. Debbe, I think it may be frozen shoulder like you had. Today, on a scale of 1 to 10, it was a 10 and I was practically in tears all day. I iced it all day, took 2 oxycodes, and nothing would work. Not sure how to get rid of this pain. I am calling my dr tomorrow as it keeps me up throughout the night. Besides the shoulder pain, I am feeling pretty good.

    Thanks!

    Hi Jen...

You should check with Dr. Boachie's office if you're uncertain, but I was on a treadmill as soon as I got home from the hospital. I actually preferred it to walking outside, as I had the handrails as a safety net.

      Hi Jen,
Dr. N allowed me to start the treadmill after my 6 week appointment. Just to make sure though, ask Dr. B's office.

As far as the shoulder, I know how intense the pain can be. You should probably see a shoulder specialist to have an Xray and make sure nothing is structurally wrong. If that's the case, like it was for me, then you probably need PT specifically for the shoulder. It took 2 months of PT, 3x a week, the whole hour each time to get good results on the shoulder. Even after PT was over, I still wasn't 100% so I had to continue with exercises on my own.

        Hi Jen,

I'm so sorry about your shoulder pain. I hope you can get to the bottom of it and get relief soon.

I used a treadmill soon after getting home from the hospital because it was icy outside. I couldn't stand to be out in the cold anyway. The Dr. didn't really want me walking on a treadmill, but I said it was the treadmill or nothing. I was walking so slowly then that I couldn't see that it would make a difference. My treadmill has a safety device that you clip to your belt so that if you fall, the treadmill stops. Do what you have to do is my philosophy, just be careful.
