  • antibacterial soap before surgery

Has anyone used an antibacterial soap before surgery? I read to wash with a Chlorhexidine soap (hibiclens ?) is a good idea. I'm not sure if it's necessary, So if anyone had any thoughts about it let me know.

My daughter is having surgery soon and that is one of her instructions to wash daily for 3 days prior to the surgery.

I was admitted to hospital the night before because I live 150 ks from hospital and because I was going to be taken to theatre early in the morning. I was given some antibacterial soap to shower with on the morning immediately before surgery.

Yes, I was given the soap at my pre-op appointment and was told to shower with it the morning of my surgery. I was happy to do anything to minimize the risk of infection...

David checked into the hospital the day before surgery, and was given a special antibacterial soap to shower with as well.

With my spondy surgery I was given a bottle of antibacterial soap to shower with the morning of surgery. They told me to wash and rinse my hair first so that the last soap that touched my body and was rinsed off was the one they gave me. I meet with the doc again Monday morning before my Tuesday morning surgery so I don't know if they will give me something at that point or not.

I wasn't given any instrustions either about showering with antibacterial soap. I was admitted at 7am on the morning of surgery, and surgery was scheduled at 8.30am. I showered as normal that morning, however, after leaving hospital, although my incision looked really good on day 2 post-op and i showered without a dressing, i thought that i would use an antibacterial soap daily in the shower to keep extra clean during recovery!

I got to the hospital at 4:45am for my 7am surgery after showering as usual at home . Nothing different. When I got to rehab, 7 days later, I just used my normal products.

I was given the antibacterial soap the Friday before my Monday surgery. I was told to shower with it the night before surgery and the morning of surgery.

As an aside, if interested, the instructions said I should not shave during either of those anti-bacterial showers. So, if you want to shave your legs or armpits prior to surgery, do it prior to the antibacterial soap shower. (This may just be a Barnes-Jewish thing, I don't know).

I had my pre-admissions testing day and they gave me an antibacterial wash for the morning before surgery. The tips about shaving and washing/rinsing hair first are good ones, thanks Lisa and Kathy. The soap part is the fun thing they gave me compared to the enema solution I got too. I'm not going to ask any questions about that one.
