  • Question for the ladies who've had surgery

How long was it after surgery that you got your period? I think I'm in menopause anyway, as I've had peri-menopause for the last seven years, and have had no period since my surgery. But just was interested to hear how long it took for others to have their period after surgery.
    Lynette - 44 years old.

    Pre-surgery thoracic 55 degrees
    Pre-surgery lumbar 85 degrees

    Post-surgery thoracic 19 degrees
    Post-surgery lumbar 27 degrees

    Surgery April 1st 2010.

Posterior spinal fusion from T9 to sacrum.

It was 13 weeks for me, which my Dr. later told me was perfectly normal. I've been regular since.

Debbe - thanks for your reply. That's interesting.

Can anyone else tell me how long it was for your cycle to get back to normal?

        Hi Lynette,

I was 23 when I had the surgery and was on the pill for health reasons. I wasn't allowed to take it in hospital and got my period about 3 or 4 days post-op.

        Surgery scheduled for April 27, 2009 - Anterior fusion from T12 - L3

Thanks Cimbom - I also was on the pill prior to surgery but I was told to stop taking it before the surgery due to blood thinning. I stayed off the pill afterward.

I'd love to hear from other ladies to compare.

If I continue to have no period for about six months, then I'll see my gyno to confirm menopause.

            Hey Lynette and all,
my doc let me stay on the pill as he thought it was safer to keep taking it than to risk pregnancy early on after the op. So I continued taking it, as normal.. But then I got my period when it wasn't due while I was still taking the pill. It was only two weeks post op. I was in extra pain the day before & couldn't work out why? I was crying and felt Terrible. Then my period came and I realised why I was extra emotional and sensitive... I guess everyones different.. Good luck

Thanks Kassie 84! You poor little thing, that must have been awful to have those pains and emotions right after this major surgery. I appreciate the feedback.

Wow Shari - so it's not just me

I'm a little disappointed actually, finding out that it's normal for about thirteen weeks to not have one, I was really hoping I'd reached menopause - I'd be happy to never see another period again in my life . Hope you're doing great Shari.

Lynette, at one of my pre-op appts, i was told that there was a chance that i may never have a period again. I said that i was not concerned as i was considering a hysterectomy due to suspected Adenomyosis. I timed to have my surgery three days after my cycle and i still had a mini bleed at 3 or 4 days postop and then back to normal i think. (my journal is not close by at the moment).

Thanks ladies for your responses, it seems like everybody has a completely different experience. I guess it just depends on the individual. Well, I'm eleven weeks post op and still no sign of a period, so it's just a wait and see situation for me.

For those wondering, I'd think instead of waiting for six months, you could have your FSH checked. If it's way high, you might figure you may indeed have been thrust into menopause!

                          Good luck, all.
Not all diagnosed (still having tests and consults) but so far:
                          Ehler-Danlos (hyper-mobility) syndrome, 69 - somehow,
                          main curve L Cobb 60, compensating T curve ~ 30
Flat back, marked lumbar kyphosis (grade?) Spondilolisthesis - everyone gives this a different grade too. Cervical stenosis op'd 3-07, minimally invasive

                            hey Lynette
i would think that the surgery would just completely disrupt your body! in every which way!! so i wouldnt be sure...yet...what was goin' on...

i went into menopause in my mid 40's...considered early at the time...i wish i'd had the doctor i have now back then! i go to CA to see her, and when i dont, i have phone consults...after having blood work done...it is all very expensive...but worth every penny...as one of my doctors in NYC used to tell me, "menopause has hit you really hard...it doesnt do that to everyone"...i dont know about that...but it hit me like a ton of bricks! awful...
now that i have my doctor...i'm OK...with my hormone creams and drops all month ... life savers!
just wish my doctor hadnt gone on oprah! harder to get appt now...
