  • Scoliosis surgery

I am a 52 female and I have scoliosis with a 62 degree curve. I have seen several doctors who say I need to have the surgery for the rod in my back. My back doesn't hurt but I have buttock and leg pain. I am told I can have a small surgery for this pain but I will still need another surgery down the road. I am thinking seriously having the scoliosis surgery but I'm very afraid I won't be able to do anything after surgery. Also, I am told I will have to wear a brace after surgery. My surgery will be from T1 to my tailbone. Please write and let me know how it felt and how long before you could do anything. I'm also having trouble deciding on a doctor. I have been to ortopedic surgeons and ones who treat adult scoliosis. Any suggestions. Thank you

    Hi Jackie...

    I know it's a difficult decision.

I run a support group for people with scoliosis, and I can tell you that there is a huge difference in rate of recovery. While age, general condition, and how much surgery is done all have an effect on recovery, there's no real way that any of us can tell you what it will be like for you. In general, I think most people who had surgery past the age of 40 will tell you that the first 4-6 weeks are pretty rough. After that, it usually gets easier and easier. Although not everyone is like this, most people say that it took them at least a year to get back to feeling really good.

A fusion of T1 to the sacrum is really drastic. Did all of the specialists tell you that you'd have to be fused T1-S1?

If you'd like to read more about the details of my surgery, you can find my story here:

hi, jackie! i had continuous pain in my left leg and buttock caused by two pinched nerves. my surgeon said he could fix that pain without doing a scoliosis surgery, but he did not recommend it. i had surgery 5 weeks ago to fix my curves (t3 to s1) and unpinch those nerves; i wear a brace now and it's really no big deal. i shower, help make dinner, meddle in my kids' homework, grocery shop, do the laundry, and clump up and down the stairs at home. things have gone smoothly so far....i'll be 50 in feb.
