  • just knew i have scoliosis

I am 37 years , female, married with 2 children, 87 kgs weight, 178 cm tall.

I have never heard about scoliosis since 2 weeks ago.

I had a car accident on jan 2009. The main problem was in my left knee, it was dislocated (without any broken) , I had a surgery and I was doing physical therapy .

for almost one year I was holding a crutch in the right hand , now I can walk as normal, I left crutch on jan 2010

4 month ago the pain in my back and the spasm in the neck in becoming very hard.

I had an x ray in the back and the doctor told me I have scoliosis. the curve form D12 to D6 is almost 40 degree.

I really do not know if this degree will progress or not … my back is seems very normal while, nobody can notice that I have this problem.. it is only that the right shoulder is higher a little

I am doing exercise : stretching the left side, strengthen the back , balancing and strengthen for the legs (the Quadriceps muscle)

please tel how to make it better , can I be normal again, can the pain stop.

Welcome. Sorry to hear about your diagnosis.

Your curve at less than 40* is too small for surgery. Anyway PT is better for pain in subsurgical curves as far as I know.

Maybe you can try different exercises like Schroth which is designed especially for scoliosis.

Also, the Spinecor brace seems to help some adults with pain but you would probably have to wear it the rest of your life for the support. The inventors are presently testing a 2-year protocol in adults but that is an arbitrary number and in no way implies the brace can only be worn for 2 years and then the benefits remain forever after it is removed. They are gathering data now... maybe you can participate in the study... try to get them to pay for the brace if you are part of their study.

Also, as for all braces, your range of motion will be restricted and it will take over some of what your muscles are doing without a brace so you should probably exercise also to avoid possibly worsening your curve. It's not a hard brace and you might find it wearable in the long term.

The bottom line is that surgery is not in your near future and you have to get relief from pain now. It sounds like it is interfering in your life. You can also go to a pain specialist. There are various injections and patches and strategies to help people with pain from scoliosis.

    Good luck.

Hi dalianemr ... sorry for what brought you here, but you have found a place where you may find much information.

Exercise can be very good for controlling pain, especially when it is designed for scoliosis. Schroth is one of those methods - Yoga and Pilaties have also been modified for scoliosis. Medical supervision along with a certified provider in those disciplines has proven beneficial to many. Adult bracing with Spinecor, while something fairly new, has proven very beneficial to me. Here is an article about one woman's journey with her young adult son: http://www.macleans.ca/science/healt...23_55198_55198

The author is very open to correspondence if you would like to know more.

While one method does not fit all ... you will find much information here and there are many here searching for answers just like yourself. Wishing you all the very best!

You have found the right place

Hi dalianemr. Thank you for joining us. Like the others have said, there are some avenues you can take to help you find relief.

I highly recommend the book "Curves, Twists, and Bends" The author is a pilates instructor who has a pretty substantial curve, and she manages with it, pain free, by doing some of the exercises she's found helpful for about 20 min a day (10 min am, 10 min pm). She's got a lot of that balancing idea you refer to, incorporating pilates, yoga, alexander technique, and scroth all in one. She's really done her homework, after leaving a career in linguistics to dedicate her life's work to helping others such as herself.

I also use a giaim balance ball at work which has helped immensely... not sure if it would be a good idea with your other injury recovery though.

        Best to you,
        Christina

          Hi...

I think a functional scoliosis is not uncommon in people using a single underarm crutch for an extended period of time. If that's the case, a good physical therapy program should be very helpful.
