  • Things I Like...about recovery

To parody a column that occasionally appears in our paper and to encourage the new post-ops:

    "Things I Like"...about recovery

    Sleeping in and leisurely breakfasts.
Spending more time with my pets.
Being away from the workplace drama.
Moving through life a little more slowly.
Getting a pedicure (Yeah, Ed, I'm sure that was top on your list, too!)
Standing in my kitchen and cooking without pain.
Walking outside in the spring weather.
Singing with my choral group without pain.
Knowing my curves will never get worse.
Moving in the pool and getting in the hot tub.
Feeling good about the way I look.
Hearing my husband say "You look so much straighter."
Meeting so many good friends on this forum.

Best wishes to all of you!

      Anne,

Enjoy it if you can. Take pride in your little accomplishments every day and don't push yourself too much. THe recovery time goes by more quickly than you think it will, and then you'll be back in the chaotic world again. I have fond memories of my recovery time here at home with my parents taking care of me and my family.

        You forgot, no lifting.

I still use that excuse at work. Even though, I can shovel a million lbs of snow and rock. Don’t tell anyone.

Practice your moans.... they help. I'm still milking it.

Also, "I have to have the front seat in the car" Everyone else can ride shotgun. Love it! "We better take the Caddy, it has the heated seats"

Choice of preferred furniture. "I don’t know if I can sit there" Very nice!

You can get out of work much easier, "Oh, my rod is killing me!" Be sure to say it singular, try not to laugh. I used that one today!

You can also use the "Oh, I think a screw is hittin something" Switch from a moan to a Ooooh! That one works great!

I've got my ski buddies buckling my ski boots now, and they help take my boots off. Bode Miller doesn’t even get that kind of service!

        Just a few extras

I just got into the pool and hot tub this week (9 wks. out) although my Dr. ok'd it at my 6 week app't. I am allowed to walk in the pool, float around and kick a little, but no swimming that involves twisting. The pool and spa at my gym both have steps with a railing. He didn't want me using the ladder to get in and out. (duh) I think hot tub is ok once incision is completely healed.

Your post is too funny! I hope your skiing buddies and significant others in your life don't get their hands on this one or you'll be in the back seat strapping your own boots and sitting on the floor at home! hee hee

I agree with all that. I loved being a cop, but it made me very cynical and arrogant. I woke and slept law enforcement. I didn't associate with anybody out of my profession. Being out of work and the possibility of having to do something else, has opened my eyes. My family and friends are more important! You get to know who your friends really are. Not many phone calls from friends from work, to see how I was doing. If I go back, things will be different. I love this forum, because it helped me along and showed me that scoliosis isn't that bad. We have to travel through some hills and valleys through out life, this is just a small valley. Thanks everybody!

                    Ed,
Why emphasize a singular rod? I think the sound of TWO rods sounds worse, i.e. gets more sympathy... haha

Because Ed is being "Ed'. Think about it, from a male perspective.

                        No,no,no!

It implies that there is so much pain, that he cannot add to 2. "Poor guy, doesn't even know he has 2 rods, he MUST be in pain"

                        Debbe,
That is the female perspective....Ha Ha, Nice try!
If I change my user name to "Rod Stewart", or better yet, just plain ROD well then, I guess I couldn’t argue.

LOL It would be so much fun doing this subject stand-up. Im sure Lucy and Desi did this routine at some point.

Seriously, the ski boots can be a real bear sometimes with a full fusion. There are areas I cannot see and can really get hung up with the plastic flaps and the buckles. Another thing that’s interesting is that I cannot attach a lift ticket on my waist. I cant see my belt loops.
No biggie. All these obstacles have simple solutions.

                        Rich
You have to realize that your co-workers think and talk about you, that’s a given. If one knows your status, he will relay this info to the others who ask. Just because someone does not call, is no reason to think they don’t care. Maybe that’s a male perspective. I want to post to everyone here, I read and think about many here, but cannot post due to various reasons. It doesn’t mean I don’t care.

Great thread! I too, enjoyed many aspects of my recovery. Life slowed down, and I got to appreciate things I didn't normally notice. It was my first real holiday.

It's good for those coming up for surgery to know there is much to be enjoyed in those first few weeks post-op as soon as the pain is under control.
                          Surgery March 3, 2009 at almost 58, now 63.
